ICT Terminology Workshop on October 17, 2018 - Kista, Stockholm
- Created: 21 October 2018

Users, unfamiliar with the terminology, technical meaning or intended functionality of the (mobile) ICT may be reluctant to use current and future devices, services or applications and may miss out on potential benefits. This can hinder uptake of helpful services and prevent exploitation of their full potential. Older people and users with limited cognitive abilities may have further requirements on the information presented, to understand how to use complex technologies.
In order to address this topic, ETSI Specialist Task Force 540 was set up under ETSI’S Technical Committee Human Factors. This EC/EFTA co-funded project spans over a two-year period (September 2017 to August 2019) with the aim to develop a set of user-centred, accessible and harmonized terminology recommendations to improve the overall user experience and accessibility of ICT. ETSI Guide EG 203499 is planned for publication in August 2019.
Within this context was organised the first free, public Workshop with stakeholders, users and experts on the 17th October 2018, hosted by and at the Swedish ICT Standardization ITS in Kista (Stockholm). The aim of the workshop was to bring together future users of these vocabularies who play an important role and have a strong say and influence in defining them. Our Mobile Age partner from Tingtun AS, Mr Mikael Snaprud, attended this workshop.
The methodology to prepare the guide and parts of the terminology was discussed in the workshop. The terminology contains a section about terms used for accessibility features of mobile devices, defining concepts like "assistive touch", "accessibility shortcuts" or "long press". The terms of the terminology should be a good description for a concept, aligned with existing terms, vendor neutral and provide definitions that are easy to understand. Short videos may be included.
You can find the current the ETSI Guide draft, and contact details to provide your comments here.
The revised draft terminology will soon be published on the same page.
