DAE blog: “How can IoT improve our smart living while ageing well?”

This is a guest blog post written by Mustapha Bouraoui, Vice-President Strategic Marketing-EMEA, STMicroelectronics and Chair of AIOTI working group on Smart living environment for ageing well

This is one of the main conclusions of the Intelligence and Recommendation Report recently published by AIOTI Working Group on Smart Living for Ageing Well (WG05), which addresses the Internet of Things technologies support to the continuous and salutary growth of the elderly population. This document is the result of an intensive teamwork led by a sub-group of high level experts from different corporations.

They have counted on great, dynamic and motivated support from more than 200 individuals from fairly diversified companies and background, registered in our Working Group.

These experts have carried out a comprehensive analysis of the on-going initiatives in the context of the Elderly care, and concerning four technological dimensions of an IoT ecosystem: Overall Architecture, Communication infrastructure, Smart sensors and actuators, User interfaces. Once the analysis done, we describe the topics, give examples on how the industry has implemented them, and provide recommendations on these specific topics.

Our recommendations mainly focus on the end-users physical, emotional and cultural specificities, helping them to adapt and change their self-perception. We are also addressing various stakeholders such as IoT technology providers and enablers, applications providers, integrators as well as institutions representing the end users. Concerning both of them, we consider that the IoT solutions should increase the efficiency of care, promote independence and improve the quality of life of senior citizens.
