Project Mobile Age: First walk through Hemelingen offers new impressions

By Silja Weisser, 10. July 2017, Stadtteil Kurier Südost

Hemelingen. Despite dark clouds and rain, residents from Hemelingen have met at the protestant church for a walk through their district. Nine senior citizens had followed the announcement of the MobileAge project team. Together they went off in order to contribute their knowledge to the planned digital district guide for older adults.

Equipped with appropriate clothing and umbrellas they walked from the protestant church to the senior residence, came across the community centre and the Tamra-Parc. On their route, they also visited the silver manufactory Wilkens and the former Coca-cola area and they went for lunch to “Eisen Werner”.

While drying and warming in the community centre, not only coffee but also questionnaires were handed out. For the MobileAge team this was a good opportunity to find out which aspects are important for the description of routes in the district. “Yet we didn’t analyse the questionnaires”, said Ulrike Gerhard from the project team. “But the first impression is that especially the description of places and their history is of interest for the participants.”

For the digital senior guide such walks are interesting because the makers get an impression of the district and its people and of the aspects that are important when digitalizing walks for older adults. Questions like “What are relevant destinations? What is interesting about them? How can they be described? What further information is important?” need to be answered. In particular, special indications like toilets, benches, the condition of sidewalks and gastronomy are of interest.

Ulrike Gerhard’s conclusion after the first of three planned district walks is positive: “We learned a lot about Hemelingen and the history and future of the different places.” This they also hope to achieve in the next walks that are planned for August.

On Tuesday the 15th August the “Hasenpromenade” is visited. Meeting point is the bus stop “Naunheimer Straße”. Afterwards there will be coffee in the Meeting point “Ameb”. The third and last walk on the 30. August is going to the “Schleng-parc”. Meeting point is “Schlengstraße 2”.
